A good Samaritan’s pickup truck was stolen Wednesday morning by a woman he stopped to help after her car caught fire on Interstate 70 in west Topeka, authorities said.
The theft led to a high-speed chase through western Shawnee County, finally coming to an end just west of Dover in Wabaunsee County.
The woman, identified as Erien Knox, 23, was taken into custody by Kansas Highway Patrol troopers. Knox was booked into the Shawnee County Jail in connection with possession of stolen property and felony obstruction. Topeka police spokeswoman Amy McCarter said more charges may be pending from other jurisdictions.
The incident began about 9:15 a.m., when a stolen green 1999 Honda Accord from Kansas City, Kan., was reported on fire on the shoulder of westbound I-70 near the S.W. Wanamaker Road exit.
Highway patrol spokesman Lt. Adam Winters said a volunteer firefighter saw the car on fire and stopped to help.
