Driver arrested in LIE wrong-way crash in Plainview, police say

A Westchester County man was arrested and charged with DWI and reckless endangerment after he drove the wrong way on the Long Island Expressway early Monday — crashing into another vehicle in Plainview and injuring the driver, police said.

Police said John Durant, 41, of Pelham, drove westbound in the eastbound lanes of the LIE at Wicks Road in Brentwood in a 2007 Nissan Murano. At about 4 a.m. on Monday, he crashed into a 2013 Nissan Altima near Exit 46 in Plainview, police said.

The Altima driver, Fatma Parwana, 24, of Medford, was taken to Good Samaritan Hospital Medical Center in West Islip and treated for injuries that are not considered life-threatening, according to police. She was later released.

Durant, who also was taken to Good Samaritan, was charged with driving while intoxicated and first-degree reckless endangerment, police said. His arraignment will occur at a later date.

The crash closed the eastbound roadway

Witnesses: Tension, taunts, and gay slurs, and then a rampage that left 3 dead

Those who knew him said James Elijah Dickson was pretty sensitive about who handled his camouflage-colored 12-gauge shotgun.

It turns out he was more sensitive about being taunted as gay.

It was that taunting, testified Levi Almonte, that touched off the April 17, 2016, massacre in a Kensington rowhouse that left three dead and Dickson, 45, charged with their murders.

“Aw, cuz, it’s like that?” asked Kenneth Stowe, according to Almonte, testifying Monday in the first day of Dickson’s nonjury trial before Philadelphia Common Pleas Court Judge Glenn B. Bronson.

Dickson, who has a long criminal record and a history of mental illness, agreed to waive a jury trial if Assistant District Attorney Andrew Notaristefano did not seek the death penalty.

Dickson’s lawyers, Mythri Jayaraman and Wendy Ramos, said Dickson will testify in his defense and claim he shot in self-defense.

Almonte, 26, who escaped the bloodshed, described Stowe as

Almost all murders and attempted murders in Sweden using firearms are carried out by people with foreign backgrounds, according to a new study.

According to research carried out by Dagens Nyheter, 90 out of the 100 offenders and suspected offenders examined by the liberal daily newspaper have at least one foreign-born parent, the vast majority having roots in the Middle East and North Africa.

In around half of the cases, the men were born in Sweden whilst others migrated to the country at a young age. The study looked at 53 convicted and 47 suspected perpetrators involved in shootings in public places which have taken place since 2013.

“The fact is that street gangs, and violence are phenomena that occur in some areas, and most of the people who live in these areas are of foreign descent,” said Amir Rostani, a sociologist at Stockholm University.

Demand soars for concealed carry permits, data shows | Fox News

The number of concealed carry permits in the United States has topped 15 million over the last year, according to data collected by the Crime Prevention Research Center.

That’s the largest one-year increase ever in the number of permits issued, according to the research center. In July 2016, the center reported that 14.5 million people had concealed handgun permits. As of May of this year, the number is already 15.7 million.

John Lott, founder of the group and a Fox News columnist, said several states, including Arizona, Florida, Michigan and Texas, have seen a big jump in the number of gun permits issued. There are several reasons for the increase – most notably, a rise in women and minorities seeking to purchase handguns, Lott said.

“I think you’re continuing to see a change in the composition of people who go and get permits,” Lott said. “Women are growing at a much faster rate

Snowflake Professor Resigns Over Campus Carry

By Steve Sheldon |Posted: May 17, 2017

A University of Kansas associate professor from the departments of History and of American Studies recently resigned citing concerns over campus carry in Kansas, which becomes effective July 1. Professor Jacob Dornan states in his resignation letter that “Kansas can have great universities, or it can have concealed carry in classrooms, but it cannot have both.”

Why not?

He blathers on: “In practical terms, concealed carry has proved to be a failure. Campus shootings have become all too frequent, and arming students has done nothing to quell active shooter situations because students do not have the training to effectively combat shooters and rightly fear becoming identified as a suspect themselves.”

Excuse me, Mr. Professor, are you aware that according to a Crime Prevention Research Center report, 98.4% of mass public shootings occur in gun-free zones? Dr. John Lott, noted criminologist and President of the Crime Prevention Research
