SARASOTA, FL (WWSB) – You never think you’ll be the victim of an assault, random attack or home invasion, but every day these violent crimes are happening on the streets of the Suncoast.

Police are urging that you learn how to protect yourself, so if you ever have to fight for your life, you’re prepared.

Protecting yourself against violent crimes goes deeper than locking your doors and installing a home security system. If you really want to lower your chance of being the next victim, police suggest simply: be aware of your surroundings.

“If a bad person wants to make you a victim, they’re going to do that if you’re not paying attention,” Lt. Randy Boyd of Sarasota Police Department says. “We have really good instincts. Jurors decide against death penalty for man who shot OKC store …

Oklahoma County jurors have decided against the death penalty for an Oklahoma City man who fatally shot a well-liked convenience store clerk in 2013.

Instead, Darrien Hasmii Clark, 29, was given a punishment of life in prison without the possibility of parole for the killing of Habib Hajimirzaei, 62. Clark denied involvement.

The jury found Clark guilty earlier this month of first-degree murder and five other felonies related to what prosecutors called “a violent and dangerous crime spree.” Jurors Monday night chose the punishment for the murder count after deliberating about five hours.

“We are satisfied with the jury’s verdict. Darrien Clark took the life of an innocent, hardworking man,” Assistant District Attorney Merydith Easter said. “He will live out the remainder of his life in prison and we believe that is justice for the family of Habib Hajimirzaei.”
