Judge denies immunity to defendant charged with murder in 2015 4th Quarter Sports Bar shooting

COLUMBUS, Ga. — One defense attorney representing a defendant in a Columbus sports bar murder trial is trying to lighten the charges for his client. Demark Ponder is accused of shooting and killing Dominic Mitchell at the 4th Quarter Sports Bar and Grill back in 2015. Ponder’s attorney claims his client shot in self-defense.

Ponder, 48, reenacted and recalled his experience at the sports bar in court Tuesday. Ponder says he, 53-year-old Daginald Wheeler, and 36-year-old James Daniels, along with about five other people affiliated with the Outcast motorcycle gang, went to “hang out” at the sports bar.

Judge denies self-defense claim ahead of Kent County murder trial

GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A Kent County judge ruled against the defense in a pair of pretrial requests made Friday, April 7, in a May 2016 Wyoming murder case. 

Circuit Court Judge Mark Trusock said he did not seen any evidence that would allow Angel Villegas-Guzman to use a self-defense claim in defense of charges tied to the killing of 28-year-old Kyro Garnett.

Additionally, Trusock denied the defense’s request that statements made by Villegas-Guzman in an interview with police be suppressed when the case goes to trial.

Villegas-Guzman is accused of shooting and killing Garnett on May 6, 2016, at a Crossroads Apartment unit near 44th Street and Clyde Park Avenue.

In addition to the murder charge, Villegas-Guzman faces first-degree home invasion, carrying a concealed weapon and felony firearms.
