Jury set to deliberate Tuesday following closing arguments in 4th Quarter Sports Bar murder trial

COLUMBUS, Ga. — A jury now holds the fate of three defendants accused of murdering a Columbus man. The judge is set to charge the jury Tuesday in the 4th Quarter Sports Bar murder trial. The state and defense gave closing arguments, hoping to convince the jury to decide guilty or not guilty.

Assistant District Attorney Alonza Whitaker opened up the closing arguments Monday with the theme “gone in 45 seconds.” He made a variation on the popular movie title to convince the jury 48-year-old Demark Ponder, 53-year-old Daginald Wheeler, and 36-year-old James Daniel, Jr. played a part in shooting 33-year-old Dominic Mitchell.

Judge denies immunity to defendant charged with murder in 2015 4th Quarter Sports Bar shooting

COLUMBUS, Ga. — One defense attorney representing a defendant in a Columbus sports bar murder trial is trying to lighten the charges for his client. Demark Ponder is accused of shooting and killing Dominic Mitchell at the 4th Quarter Sports Bar and Grill back in 2015. Ponder’s attorney claims his client shot in self-defense.

Ponder, 48, reenacted and recalled his experience at the sports bar in court Tuesday. Ponder says he, 53-year-old Daginald Wheeler, and 36-year-old James Daniels, along with about five other people affiliated with the Outcast motorcycle gang, went to “hang out” at the sports bar.

‘Good Samaritan’ helps detain French Quarter hit-and-run suspect: NOPD

After hitting a pedestrian with his car in the French Quarter on Friday (April 7), a 34-year-old man was detained with the help of a “Good Samaritan” and arrested by authorities, New Orleans police said.

NOPD spokesman Aaron Looney said about 10:45 a.m. police responded to a hit-and-run accident with injury at the intersection of Conti and Chartres streets. A woman received minor injuries to her leg and foot and was taken by ambulance to an area hospital, he said. 

NOPD 8th District officers responding to the scene apprehended suspect Kirk Alexander, who Looney said “was being detained by a Good Samaritan” until police arrived.
