TFD: N. Topeka fire was intentially set; Good Samaritan woke resident

TOPEKA, Kan. (WIBW) — The occupant of a north Topeka home made it to safety Monday morning after a passing driver spotted heavy smoke billowing from the back of the house.

The Topeka Fire Dept. says the Good Samaritan quickly stopped, went up to the home and started knocking. After banging on the door several times, the person inside woke up and got out of the home.

Firefighters arriving at the scene, in the 300 block of NW Fairchild Street, around 7:45 a.m. said they could see smoke and flames coming from the south side of the home. They put the fire and managed to keep it from spreading to other structures.

The preliminary investigation indicates the the blaze was intentionally set. Investigators say it started on the south side of the home and estimated the damages at $5,000.

Resident shoots, kills one intruder in attempted home invasion – WITN

JACKSONVILLE, N.C. (WITN) – Onslow County’s district attorney says there will be no charges brought against a resident who shot and killed a would-be home invader earlier this week.

Stacey Ross, Jr., 20, was killed Tuesday night after police say he and four others tried to force their way into a man’s apartment at Carolina Place Apartments on Delaney Drive in Jacksonville.

District Attorney Ernie Lee says the resident, who hasn’t been identified, fired in self defense.

Police were able to track down the other four people involved in the attempted home invasion.

Joshua Cordts, 18; Sean Padgett, 18; Steven Lewis, 18; and Haleigh Noling, 17, were all charged with attempted armed robbery with a dangerous weapon and conspiracy to commit robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Resident shoots 2 home invasion suspects, killing 1, police say

SALT LAKE CITY — A resident shot two men — one was killed and one was seriously injured — after police say the men broke into the resident’s apartment early Thursday.

About 3:15 a.m. two men entered an apartment at Park Place at City Center, 731 S. 300 East. Information about how the men got into the apartment was not immediately released.

Three adults were inside the apartment at the time, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Brandon Shearer. Once inside, there was some sort of confrontation and one of the adults fired multiple rounds at the home invasion suspects.

One of the suspects died inside the apartment. The other man was shot multiple times before running out, Shearer said.

RICHMOND — A man allegedly caught breaking into a Post Road couple’s apartment early Wednesday morning was shot by a resident after the suspect tried to break through the front door a second time.

Richmond police Chief Scott MacMaster said the suspect, Shad Hembree, 42, suffered a wound that did not appear to be serious. He was struck by a single shot from a handgun, by Trevor Whitney, 28, who lives with his girlfriend, Lindsey Levasseur, 23, at the residence being broken into.

Richmond resident shoots neighbor during alleged home invasion

A man allegedly caught breaking into a Richmond couple’s apartment early Wednesday morning was shot by a resident after the suspect tried to break through the front door to regain entry to the apartment, police said.

Richmond Police Chief Scott MacMaster said the suspect, Shad Hembree, 42, received what appeared to be a non-life-threatening injury during the incident. He was wounded by a single shot from a handgun fired by Trevor Whitney, 28, who lives at the residence with his girlfriend.

MacMaster said police were called around 5:45 a.m. Wednesday and the woman caller said a man was in her apartment and her boyfriend was yelling at him to get out.

The boyfriend, wielding a .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol, managed to eject Hembree from the apartment, and went back inside and locked the door, police said.
