Police: Stranded woman stole good Samaritan’s pickup truck in Topeka, led officers on high-speed chase

A good Samaritan’s pickup truck was stolen Wednesday morning by a woman he stopped to help after her car caught fire on Interstate 70 in west Topeka, authorities said.

The theft led to a high-speed chase through western Shawnee County, finally coming to an end just west of Dover in Wabaunsee County.

The woman, identified as Erien Knox, 23, was taken into custody by Kansas Highway Patrol troopers. Knox was booked into the Shawnee County Jail in connection with possession of stolen property and felony obstruction. Topeka police spokeswoman Amy McCarter said more charges may be pending from other jurisdictions.

The incident began about 9:15 a.m., when a stolen green 1999 Honda Accord from Kansas City, Kan., was reported on fire on the shoulder of westbound I-70 near the S.W. Wanamaker Road exit.

Highway patrol spokesman Lt. Adam Winters said a volunteer firefighter saw the car on fire and stopped to help.

A volunteer firefighter found out as much Wednesday morning after authorities said his pickup truck was stolen by the woman he had stopped to help after her car caught fire on Interstate 70 in west Topeka.

The theft led to a high-speed chase through a large portion of western Shawnee County, finally coming to an end just west of Dover in Wabaunsee County.

The woman suspected in the truck theft was taken into custody by Kansas Highway Patrol troopers. She was expected to be booked into the Shawnee County Jail on multiple counts related to the theft and chase. Her name wasn’t immediately available.

Good Samaritan robbed helping ‘stranded motorist’

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A Good Samaritan tried to a help a woman he thought was stranded on the interstate– but he ended up with a gun in his face and the victim of a robbery.

Patrick Pigford is the kind of guy who just likes to help.

“Since I’ve been driving, I’ve always been taught to help people if they need help.”

So, on his way home from Charlotte to Fort Mill this week, he didn’t hesitate to stop when he saw what looked like a woman in need of help.

“As I was coming down 77, there was a lady trying to wave people down, so I pulled over to see if she needed any help.”

Turns out she wasn’t so helpless– her boyfriend was in the passenger seat with a gun.
