When Peter Gold saw a man dragging a woman by the hair toward his vehicle around 4 a.m. on Nov. 20, 2015, in New Orleans, he didn’t think. He just reacted.

“I said to myself, ‘This isn’t right,’ ” Gold, 27, tells PEOPLE, speaking out Tuesday for the first time about the incident.

“The next thing I knew I was out of the car and yelling at the guy, ‘Leave this girl alone! Get away from her!’ ” Gold recalls.

The man, later identified as Euric Cain, turned to Gold and demanded money, he says.

New Orleans Police said a man who was apparently acting as a good Samaritan on Saturday afternoon (April 8) was robbed at gunpoint in Algiers after he responded to someone who asked for help jump-starting their vehicle.

Police said the 38-year-old male victim was flagged down by someone in the 3700 block of Gen. De Gaulle Drive who was asking for help jump-starting their car. After the man stopped to help, the person requesting the jump pulled out a handgun and forced the victim to turn over his belongings, police said.

Police said the man complied with the person’s demands. After the robbery, the person who asked for help with the vehicle fled in what was described as an older model Chevrolet Cavalier.

“Good Samaritan” is Killed While Shielding Wife

He’s called a “first rate protector” and Sunday, Jonathan Murphy lost his life as he tried to protect his wife and others around him during a jewelry heist at Rolling Oaks Mall.

A GoFundMe account has been set up for the family of the man described by police as a Good Samaritan.

The 42-year-old employee at World Car Hyundai and his wife, Aimee, were getting their wedding rings cleaned Sunday at Kay Jewelers when a couple of thieves smashed a jewelry case. One of the men was waving a gun.

Aimee Murphy told the Houston Chronicle she froze, but Jonathan immediately shielded her.

“The next thing I know, he was falling to the ground,” she told the Houston Chronicle.

His heroic actions Sunday didn’t surprise those who knew him well. The GoFundMe page states he recently sprang into action when someone tried to break into his home while his family was there.
